as long as you don’t wear red…

Filed under: Uncategorized — sassinak @ 4:48 pm

no one got my last title. i’m sad. no one ever gets my titles either and they’re often puns or song lyrics or pop culture references or…

okay bygones.

damn i’m so glad i found bolthouse farms juice here. this shit is so fucking good. (they didn’t have the green one though :(). that alone will get me shopping at loblaws again (that and the baby kiwis mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.)

[i feel like i need to mention that this post isn’t motivated by anyone or anything in my life. it’s just what i think about around this time of year]

postsecret is all about love and hearts this week. not really what i’m in the mood for i confess. my bookstore sent out a little mailer for a contest to win some bonbons for ‘singles awareness day’ which cracks me up. what a fantastic counterexpression. much better than mine which has been ‘happy vd day’ for years.

no, no one ever gets it.

i’ve recently been informed that in latin cultures they don’t celebrate february 14th the same way we do. in fact it’s a love AND friendship day. so groups of friends will get together to celebrate their love for each other and that sort of thing.

this seems a lot healthier than the north american way. especially if you consider just how many supremely miserable people there are in the world because of such pressure filled days as valentines.

i mean really, if you have a long term significant other it’s fine because you both know what you want and how to deal with the day. but what do you do if it’s your first date? your third date? your birthday? your tenth date? you have to work? your six month anniversary? okay even by the six month point you probably have an idea what you each want out of something like hearts and flowers day. maybe.

take me for example. roses are nice and all but they don’t do it for me. lilies? orchids? giant tropical hawaiian flowers? for fuckin’ sure. but roses? they just don’t do it the same way. well i lie. there is something to be said for a single perfect rose… (and really there isn’t a flower i don’t like) or candy/chocolate? i can’t stand milk chocolate. okay i can stand it because it has chocolate in it. but it doesn’t do it for me the way really good dark chocolate will. [and no godiva is NOT really good chocolate… just in case anyone who loves a chocoholic is wondering]

cinnamon hearts? i am a total whore for those things. can’t stop eating them. so if you love me you NEVER give them to me.

and? if we’ve had two dates and you show up fully hearts and flowers and ridiculous i’m going to think you’re nuts. that’s where the single flower comes in handy. you can’t force romance after all and trying to overdo it with someone you barely know can be kind of a disaster.

anyway the point is that the traditional sort of methodology of singles awareness day really doesn’t work for that many people and it ESPECIALLY doesn’t work if you’re single. which i nearly always am in february actually. so what are the rest of us supposed to do?

at least the marrieds have a shot at having something to do that isn’t lame and may perhaps not involve a restaurant full of people trying to pretend they’re in love. and if memory serves it’s quite nice if you’re in the second to eighth month of dating because you still want to get that silly and romantic with each other.

and that leaves everyone else.

the ones who are coming around to break up time
the ones who think hearts and flowers are silly but are nonetheless in love
the ones who are single and happy that way
the ones who are playing the field
the ones who have a significant other who cares deeply for valentines day
the ones who will pick up on singles awareness day (and often regret it the rest of the year)
the ones who don’t give a shit
the ones who feel suicidal every february
the ones i’m not thinking of…

i think the coolest vd day activity i’ve heard of was actually organised by habitat for humanity. they have a home building day for singles on the saturday before vd day! how cool is that?

i mean if you’re going to do something romantic and you’re single i can’t really imagine something better than building a house for a needy family while you’re at it. my friend dj tried to do it but it was full already.

ah well. she would have had a great time actually.

so for those of you into romance (hi mom and dad!) please party responsibly. everyone else? please complain in blogland! [my comments especially!! *grin*]

okay weirdest thing i ever heard of.

someone stole one of those portable 30 foot climbing walls. it weighs SIX THOUSAND POUNDS!!!

okay maybe not EVER heard of but damm it’s weird.

first of all climbing is a way smaller community than anyone thinks it is so *someone* is going to hear about that wall and let the owners know. cause that’s just not cool.

but seriously it’s thirty feet high AND weighs six thousand pounds. wouldn’t it be easier to build your own?

speaking of climbing i’m taking a week off. i’m moving well but my hands don’t want to hold anything. seems like a sign from my body to me.

happy sunday. i’m just finishing my laundry and now for hours of tv with some munchies (it’s sick how healthy they are, baby kiwis, bananas, granola, almonds, sunflower seeds and maybe some pretzels and nutella. i’ve turned into a health nut even on veg out night. weird)

have a great evening you guys, i’ll be in and out.

  1. did your last post title have something to do with Oompah Loompahs? they’re orange…

    i confess. i didn’t get it.

  3. i always thought valentines day wasn’t about romance and relationships, but was more a day in the year where you show the people you care about that you do, in fact, care about them. i send my mom flowers, i buy everyone i know little gifts…its just a day where i say “thanks for letting me be in your world”…but most people don’t view it that way. and i admit i’m more than displeased to have abso-fuckin-lutely nothing to do for valentines day by way of going out with someone etc.

i’m a tulip girl :) roses don’t do shit for me either..however, i do love tea roses because ever since i was 5 my parents have always given me tea roses for my, they found their little way into my heart.

and i always steal climbing walls. just stuff them in my one even notices ;)

  4. you know elle that’s sort of the attitude i’m chasing after exactly. make it about all the people that you love instead of just the one you’re boinking.

i think that’s a great thing that you do and if i think of anything cool for anyone i’ll definetely do that. much nicer than fake romance. (note that real romance is fantastic)

i have plans strangely enough. but they’re not about st. valentine.

oh tulips are excellent. yeah i love them too. are tea roses the tiny little ones or? i really do love all flowers, even roses… but roses don’t make my top ten at all.

damm girl, i want a bra that can hold a 6000 pound wall!

    Comment by sassinak — February 12, 2006 @ 5:28 pm | Reply

  5. Sass- you have that bra.

Valentines Day… yuk. Here I am married and worthy of celebrating such a holiday in full-effect but… I just can’t.

In fact, I seldom bring myself to flights of romantic fancy unless It’s our anniversary or a spontaneous date.

Flowers in general I despise because I can’t keep them, not even dried. Only flower I kept was a single long stemmed red rose my (now) husband had perched on the bed waiting for me to arrive at that no-tell mo-tell on our first’encounter’

If I’m to receive anything remotely flowerish, hit the nursery and buy me something I can stick in my yard to enjoy over and over again for years to come… that way I can nuture it and watch it grow… like a relationship…

That’s the perfect Emma gift. Hmmm, make it a blueberry bush.

As far as the love lorn on valentines day… I give them mad huggs… and I want them to know that even us in love married folk don’t necessarily hit the big red heartshaped candy boxes or the debeers stores to suit each other.

We just kiss and say “damn, you’re an awesome partner.. and i love ya.”

Hallmark holidays bite ass, this one is no exception.

  6. I’ll give a hint on the orange thing:
You’re Orange you moreon and it’s one thing for you not to notice but if your wife hasn’t picked up on the fact that her husband has changed colours she’s just not paying attention.

  7. bubbles: damm girl i don’t even have a bra SMALL enough for my boobs anymore. it’s very weird but i like it.

i love the way you and your hubby celebrate. seems like an excellent way to appreciate each other. i guess it’s nice to have one guaranteed date with your honey that year? but yeah i think spontanaity and anniversaries are all good.

    why can’t you keep flowers?

please tell me that story someday?

i love plants. flowers that keep on giving for years on end. so much better. love plants.

oh man blueberry or raspberry bushes totally rock. you really do want one

dude i didn’t think all the marrieds hit the debeers stores… god i hope most of them know better. it’s just a tough holiday because somehow they’re trying to make you feel guilty for not participating.

i still like what you and hub do a lot.

i love christmas though… love it. and my birthday and hallowe’en and any excuse to eat with my family…

  9. Jesus, between you and elle. See, I do’t give roses (and I am not just talking about V-day). I prefer tulips, lillies and orchids. I grow iris, tulips and glads. Now I may plant some rose bushes because they are pretty and are good for security, plus I can grow them well for some reason. But for gifts…not roses.

  10. ohhhhhhhhhhh glads
i LOVE glads they’re so gorgeous!

i like iris but they sort of bore me when they aren’t in flower. i like the way tulips just disappear and i like the leaves on lilies.

can’t grow orchids, no good light and outside doesn’t work here… :(

rose BUSHES are awesome. but that’s not the same thing as all.

Do you know why we have Valentines day? It’s a great should find out about it and like most celebrations, todays version is a little different to the original…

LMAO at the wall being stolen, not because it’s funny but because of the conversations that would take place between theif and anyone who sees it!! What i’d like to know is how the heck do you steal something so damn big? And WHY? Thats the one that gets me thinking…let us know if you find out won’t you??

  21. VD Day *snicker* :) I think it’s a dumb holiday, really. We don’t have that in Argentina…we are of the mind that there isn’t one day that we need to show love but EVERY DAY…so having one day would be stupid. It is basically Corporate World’s way to force people to spend money…right, cause how much you love me is meassured by how much you spend on me…HOW fucked up is THAT???

Last year, I wore black on VD Day. All the women in the office were wearing red and they asked me why I was wearing black. I said that’s the colour one wears to a funeral. And since love is dead, it seemed appropriate. I almost made them all cry. I thought it was hilarious. I don’t really think love is dead but I like to mess with people, especially when they buy into the stupid stuff.

I’m a calla lillies, sunflowers, orchids, jasmines and tulips kind of girl. Roses seem generic. But roses ever so often…not a bad thing at all.

Stealing a wall???? Duuuude…shut up! That is just on the other side of ridiculous.

And your munchies sound delish :)

  22. deb: share anyway!

nat: it really is a dumb holiday. it’s funny actually because my friend of the latin culture is brazilian no wait venezuelan so i’m guessing there’s some cultural relating happening there.

i agree with the every day mentality as well. what i only love you but one day a year? that’s pretty easy. i hate the idea that love and money have become tied together, it’s blatantly ridiculous.

funny thing that a thoughtful 2 dollar gift is often more appreciated than a generic 50 dollar gift. ah sweet irony.

you wore black? dude i am so doing that! at least to work, i think i might wear something non pink but still colourful that evening.

that is a nasty little messing with people. it’s fantastic. way to take their assumptions and turn them sideways.

ohhhh calla lilies! sunflowers! dude you have excellent taste… and an excellent point. it’s not that i don’t like roses, i just don’t ONLY like roses. be creative dammit. (especially those beautiful silver ones…)

i know, that’s why i linked the story, i didn’t think anyone would believe me!

    my munchies WERE delish!

  42. And Valentine’s Day has never had quite the same meaning for me as I assume it does for other.
Since it’s my birthday, that has always been my primary focus on Valentines Day.

However I think it can serve as a reminder, if used correctly, of the feelings a couple shared at the beginning of their relationship, and perhaps still feel, maybe deep in the cockles. Sometimes things can get dull and even sex can become routine.
Contrived or not, on Valentine’s Day couples do shit for each other that they often don’t on August 14. Which is a shame yes, but still it’s nice to say “I love you”, when sometimes people forget.

    Girls have cooties.

Give me flowers any day, any way. Cut, dried or planted. I love them! But I get so mad at hubby when he spends too much money on them (i.e. roses) when I would have been just as happy with daisies or carnations.

  45. OK, first off I have to say that I know where the mystery post title comes from. I told you on Saturday, but I had the benefit of you saying it to me, and it may have been the vocal inflection that twigged me.

And I too believe that Godiva is overpriced shite. When I was in Belgium I made a point of buying hand-made chocolate from several (at least 6) ‘leading’ chocolatiers and I can say with confidence that Godiva was the worst. Though on a continuum of chocolate, Godiva is much better than Hershey or any other commercialized North American crap. And your assistant is thrilled to death when you get her some for Secretary’s Day.

Incidentally, the best chocolate in Belgium was a family business that has two shops in Bruges and it was the least expensive.

As for cinnamon hearts… I too used to love them. Until I ate an entire bag for dinner, and later ended up busting a kidney and in the hospital on a morphine drip. Which made me sick. So I puked red foam for five days. And if you think those bad boys are hot going down, the effect is tenfold on the rebound. So, yeah… kind of averse to them now.

mike: damm dude save all your chocolate gifty treats and give them to me!!! cause i love me the chocolate and the peanut butter that you tragically lack the love gene for.

i love gardening also… and i certainly miss it. plants are nice but gardens rule. community gardens rule more even.

i like the ring vd day has for you. it removes all the stupid expectations and lets you do whatever you like which is way better than having to do things that people just expect you to do. much better. as for reminding i think you’re totally right about that. if used correctly it’s an excellent tool for keeping couples happy with each other. but that isn’t usually what happens. as for august 14th? that’s two days after my birthday and i expect much loving that day.

    my cooties taste good.

sign: yeah see i’m with you. happy friendly valentine’s dude!

cast: that shit is just funny

pv: i knew you would have gotten it anyway. i had faith in you and mike.

and people will steal anthing that’s not nailed down … and sometimes even stuff that IS nailed down … I remember someone once stole the heavy, metal statue of Col. Sanders that used to be outside one of the KFCs here … they found it a few blocks down the road … LOL

However I am currently cooking myself up some yummy kebabs and I might find something healthy to go with them.

While I wait I am playing with my crayons.
