olympic hockey thoughts

Filed under: Uncategorized — sassinak @ 1:01 pm

.
note that i have a sinus cold and make no promises of lucidity. funnily enough that will just convince leah mclaren that she’s right about bloggers [saturday’s post]. man i’m pissed at her. so as i drink berry boost (yup bolthouse farms strikes again… this one has 500% of the vitamin C you need in a day) and eating lentil soup you guys get a post.

okay i know it’s not saturday night so technically i’m not supposed to be talking about hockey but y’all are just going to have to suck it up.

i was really curious to see what would happen with the olympics because the leafs coach was coaching the canadian team and their captain was captaining the swedish team, for those of you that don’t follow the nhl or at least the leafs a quick recap.

the leafs fucking suck this year and have been growing steadily suckier for a few years now. recently there has been talk that perhaps their captain Mats Sundin should be canned. i’ve also heard discussion of the goalie, eddie balfour, and his age and thus the requirement that he be canned as well or instead. as though age is all that matters or something.

i do not comprehend this at all.

regarding balfour? he’s the reason the leafs are even IN contention for a playoff spot [not in a spot, in contention for…] what with their total lack of defence and habit of hanging the goalie out to dry. they could have a robot with lightning reflexes in goal and it would still be fucked if it didn’t have any defence.

which it doesn’t.

the real question has to do with the captain and the coach.

the captain has been part of the team a little longer than the coach but it’s been eight years that they’re both been there so i’m not thinking that it makes much difference. that said, i feel quite strongly that the leafs problems stem from the coach and not the players.

the majority of the team has swapped out since those two started but they’ve continuously swapped for veteran players. age and experience are wonderful but in hockey you need some youth and enthusiasm too.

anyway here’s the part of the equation that i don’t get. no one, and i mean no one is talking about pat quinn. they seem to have decided that he’s a great coach and that regardless of his team’s total failure to adapt to the new rules that everything falls in the lap of the captain.

so i was watching the olympics with some extreme curiousity because i figured that it was as good a time as any to determine who the problem actually was. and it could well have turned out to be both of them.

team canada was plagued in large part with a lot of the problems that the leafs have been struggling with for years. for some reason these folks seem to think that dump and chase is still a valid hockey strategy.

yeah not so much.

team canada also brought a pile of bruisers and left the scorers and the skaters at home. someone explain this to me please? my dad thinks that one can be set squarely at the feet of management but i don’t imagine gretzky is foolish enough not to ask the coach’s opinion? and if he is? damm gretz you’re really bad at putting teams together.

of course that stupid gambling ‘scandal’ didn’t help. seriously people care less about that than they cared about lewinskygate… it was just an excuse to drag a good man’s name through the mud.

so pat quinn’s team? didn’t even get to play for a medal. didn’t even make the semi finals. got knocked out by the team that came fourth. got their asses kicked.

i try not to think about it being canada because then i sulk about how the americans got ONE more medal than us. ONE! damm it would have been awesome to beat them at that for once.

that said i’ve had a love hate relationship with the canadian men’s hockey team for a while. stop acting like you’re ENTITLED to a medal and start playing for it. dammit.

anyway yeah, lack of teamwork, bad strategy, failure to get the puck anywhere near the net… heck i could be talking about the leafs. but i’m not.

i’m talking about the canadian national men’s hockey team. the one with the leafs COACH coaching them.

okay well that’s only half of the picture. then there’s the question of the leafs captain. the guy who is apparently at fault for the leafs problems. the guy who passes the puck without looking and it hits the stick of the guy he passes it to.

the guy who regularly leads the league in game winning goals or scoring chances or whatever. the guy who passes so his teammate can score. the guy who led his team to a gold medal at the olympics. here they are partying:

yup that makes sense to me. clearly we should fire the captain. he is obviously old and incapable of playing. but that coach. yeah yeah! keep him… he’s so awesome.

whatfucking ever.

  1. We are so alike (at least when we’re sick) that’s it’s bizarre. I am also chugging Bolthouse Farms…except the stuff I had was called “C-Boost”…good stuff! I’m not eating lentils, but I AM eating Ramen (chicken flavored-thankyouverymuch) and that stuff is like crack to me. I eat like a college student year-round.

Also, don’t be too down on Canada…although the Americans did manage 1 (one) more medal than the Canadians this year, at least your hockey team didn’t embarass themselves in the worst way: off the ice. Our so-called “top scorer” whinged about EVERYTHING in the post-game interview. He bitched about the coach, he bitched about his teammates…he even bitched about the VOLUNTEERS that booked their flights and hotel rooms in Torino. I half-expected them to trash their hotel rooms again, like they did in Nagano. Shameful.

You guys will win the medaling contest in Vancouver in 2010. The home-crowd will generate enough energy to put you over the top, I’m sure of it. Look what competing in Torino did for the Italians! And don’t forget that Cindy Klaussen – a Canadian – took home a record FIVE medals all by herself. And to top it all off, the mayor of Vancouver seems to be one of the coolest dudes on the planet. I may be wrong about that, but to all appearances, he is.

Don’t worry; I won’t burst into “O Canada” at this point. ;-) But only because I don’t know the words, and I couldn’t understand what that opera singer was actually singing.

Gonna go blow my nose again, but be proud of your country, Sass. You guys rocked.

  2. Your Sassiness…. last night, I was at my Publix and they had green goodness. OH MY FUCKING GOD. Were you ever right?! That shit is completely yummylicious beyond any expectation. My mouth was definitely having mouthgasms. I drank the whole small bottle. My body was in bliss.

I think I am gonna start buying it regularly and just allow myself a small amount daily…cause that is just too good not to be had.

And now I can’t wait to try the other ones.

    {{huggs}} feel better :)

  3. hey scorp:

i didn’t used to drink bolthouse farms, i am a recent convert in fact. before i drank water or apple juice. berry boost is better. i haven’t tried the c-boost myself, what’s it taste like?

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm lentils or ramen noodles sounds awesome really. hey i’m sorta hungry, that’s a good sign!

oh dude i’m not down on canada at ALL. i am ONLY down on the canadian men’s hockey team because they have a sense of entitlement about medals. or at least that’s how it seems. and anyone with a sense of entitlement deserves to get a smackdown. even if it’s my own countrymen and i love most of them as players.

that said, damm your guy is embarassing. i mean at least ours just got sulky and came home.

oh it was so much fun watching how much fun the italians were having with everything it really was. i wanted to be tehre a lot.

and cindy and clara on saturday hugging and laughing and singing oh canada with their medals around their necks? awesome!

i don’t know about on the planet but those west coasters are a darned cool lot.

you should google the lyrics, it’s a really beautiful song.

dude i’m totally proud of my country, it’s ONLY the hockey boys i’m sorta meh about. and man the clothes! I want ALL of the hats.

nat: it wasn’t actually me. LSD introduced me to the stuff and ever since i can’t stop talking about it, introducing people to it, or drinking it.

    :)

isn’t it fantastic? you can just tell your body is loving it.

that’s what i do. i drink it when i know i won’t have fruit or enough protein or whatever. i use it as vitamins/supplements :)

    *huggs* thanks!

    berry boost!
    perfect protein!
    :)

I don’t know anything about hockey but I like their purple-and-yellow outfits. -s-

  5. Yeah man our Olympic men’s hockey team sucked throbbing rhino dick, not only because they were cocky, but because Pat Quinn needs a demotion far more than a promotion to international coaching. The Leafs are embarrassing in their suckitude.

On the other hand, we should pause and rejoice over the solid ass-kicking the women’s hockey team delivered to any other team unfortunate enough to cross their path. Although I’m pissed at the men, I’m thrilled that the sisters showed the big boys how it was done and they weren’t whiny pussies about it, like the American men. And they were gracious enough to impart some women’s hockey wisdom to their heaviest competition. Now that’s the true spirit of the Olympics.

Still wish we had beat the Americans in the medal standings, though. But then again, the Shrub may view it as an act of terrorism and unleash on the ACC, so maybe we’re better off.

  6. JMai: hey JM where ya been lately?

hee should i mention they’re royal blue? nah… cause i think they’re cute too :)

PV: okay let me tell you how much i’m enjoying the mental image of ‘sucked throbbing rhino dick’ because yeah, a LOT.

i cannot comprehend the pat quinn love in the nhl, like i just do not get it. every team he coaches slowly falls into the shitter and somehow it’s the fault of the goalie or the captain? whatfuckingever.

    buddy sucks…

i did appreciate how well the sisters played though, they smoked everyone else and did it with class and style and never once dissed their opponents. hell they looked embarassed to be over scoring because of the stupid total goals rule.

how did they impart wisdom? i missed that?

but yeah our ladies for hockey? stellar.

wouldn’t it have been nice to get that one more medal? still a lot of folks finished in the top ten and should do better next time

  7. C-Boost? It’s um…kind of a passion fruit thing with some other tangy stuff (which I can’t even pronounce, much less spell) but they can prolly describe it better than I can right here.

There. That’s 5 minutes out of your life that you’ll never get back, but it was somewhat educational, no? Also, if you go to the mainpage of the site, it asks if you’d like to go to the Canadian site…so I did. Apparently, C-Boost isn’t available there yet. Lemme know if you want some and I’ll smuggle it in ;-)

DEAR BUSH ADMINISTRATION: I AM JOKING ABOUT SMUGGLING SASS ANY BOOTLEG COPIES OF BOLTHOUSE FARMS UNRELEASED-IN-CANADA VERSIONS OF THE AMERICAN HIT SINGLE..ERM…DRINK…”C-BOOST.” I REALIZE THAT IF I WAS TO DO THAT, THEN I AM NOT VERY PATRIOTIC, HATE GOD, AND HAVE JUST DONE MY PART TO LET THE TERRORISTS WIN. I ALSO REALIZE THAT AS PUNISHMENT I MAY BE REQUIRED TO GO “QUAIL HUNTING” WITH DICK “I SWEAR TO GOD MY FINGER SLIPPED” CHENEY.

Sorry, Sass. Had to be done.

But seriously, when you’re in NY pick up a case. You’ll be glad you did.

  8. scorp: well, never ever apologise for linking the bolthouse farms. i’ve been pushing the stuff for weeks and weeks and weeks and linking it all over the place. always promote what you love, it keeps it around.

yay scorp is coming to visit!

i’ve been doing the berry boost and the strawberry banana. berry boost is BETTER.

dear bush administration: please don’t make scorp quail hunt with cheney, he’s kinda cute in his profile pic and we wouldn’t want to mess with that.

    also? *lmao*

will do dude. though with the speed it’s appearing on shelves here i’m almost not worried…

  9. You know something? I just can’t get excited about the winter olympics. Maybe because we are in the middle (actually today’s last day – boo hoo!) of summer here. Between that and EVERYTHING focusing on the Commonwealth Games coming up in downtown Melbourne I just can’t be bothered! How are the aussies going?? Did we win another gold because all the others fell down yet??!!! Classic aussie moment that one let me tell you…

  10. I watched women’s hockey this year. Why? They’re all normal women. Damn yanks have to build a team from pros…why not build a team from hot amateurs? Or college players? Instead with have a bunch of million dollar babies crying because they didn’t win.

Dudes, maybe it’s time you asked momma to change your diapers and put some of that diaper rash stuff on liberally. Seriously.

QUIT THE DAMNED WHINING. That goes for the hockey players and all of the other yanks who I guess thought would have medals in the bag. Oh yeah, learn the anthem people so when the camera is focused you can sorta word it.

Props to the Italians, nice job guys. And to the Japanese woman who one the skating. And to Cindy Klassen (damn woman, you can GO). And to Cindy and the other woman who sang the Canadian anthem while hugging, that was awesome. If I missed anyone, props to you, too.

Bolthouse Farms stuff RULES. I had Berry Boost the other day as the “wine” to go with the grilled NY strip and sweet potato steak fries Gabi and I put together for Saturday dinner. I need to try the green goodness, I might pick some up today on the way to work. 3.99 for the big bottle is steep but it’s good.

  11. how did they impart wisdom? i missed that?

I understand (and I could be wrong, the commentator said this but I was bombed) that the Canadian women’s hockey team hosts Sweden/Finland in Canada and trains with them, they lend out coaches, and they help out with fundraising strategies, etc. Apparently they’re all friends and all that other oogy stuff that is sadly missing from competitive sport.

  14. deb: i’m a lot more into the summer olympics but i still love the winter ones. there’s a few sports that are so super boring it isn’t funny but otherwise it’s pretty cool. i just found the time difference tough this time.

    commonwealths are awesome yeah.

did you know y’all got a gold medal? well you did. :) what moment was that i don’t remember?

cast: exactly. the women play for the love of the game and the men play for the money. this makes a huge difference to the fun of watching it.

most of the men’s teams are full of nhl players though dude, even sweden/finland whatever…

it’s that the american men’s hockey team repeatedly demonstrates a lack of class when they’re eliminated. makes you sorta happy when it happens.

    hee diaper rash stuff :)

that’s the thing i noticed this year, a lot of the us team showed up like they expected their medals to be handed to them… but not all.

don’t forget the us speed skater (joey cheek) who donated his medal bonuses to right to play and when people heard they matched him to the tune of 300k. and then clara hughes (the canadian woman who was hugging cindy while they sang oh canada) cleared her personal bank account and donated ten grand.

so not all of your athletes embarassed you cast. http://www.righttoplay.com/site/PageServer

that’s the only person you missed i can think of. and damm cindy can go you’re so right :) (the other woman was clara hughes and i cried while i watched them)

yeah i have it as ‘wine’ all the time now. i’m really glad to have been introduced to it. it costs the same here for the big bottle, y’all are getting a smidge ripped off.

  15. PV: no i think you’re right and that is really cool. i also really appreciated how happy the american women were to collect their bronzes. none of them looked embarassed and it was great. so with all the american dissing here i would like to stress that not ALL the us athletes are whiny children… just some of them.

i used to sit and chat with the women i was racing before the race. i didn’t try any less hard to beat them though :)

    elle: hee :)

i like blue and yellow but that’s just me :)

the canadian women had the hottest hockey uniforms at the games i thought. all black and scary looking.

dzer i love your new avatar btw.

well i think it’s a little cool actually since they were so cocky going in :)

  16. “dear bush administration: please don’t make scorp quail hunt with cheney, he’s kinda cute in his profile pic and we wouldn’t want to mess with that.”

You think Cheney’s cute? Yeah, I guess he is in a grotesquely ugly sort of way.
Ooohhhhh…you meant me! *blush* Sass…you have the cutest eye I’ve ever seen in a profile pic, too! Can’t see much more than that, though. ;-) My picture looks creepy to me…I dunno why, maybe too much caffeine that day.

After everything that’s happened here, I doubt I’d be coming up there just to visit. I’d prolly be scoping out places to live. And on a related note, most of the US-bashing is coming from Americans…so it’s ok. Not like the men’s hockey team didn’t deserve it from everyone, though. Just the same, thanks for looking at the positive too, Sass.

Besides, “O Canada” is a nice change from “Cleveland Rocks.”

Please. I meanit wobbles a bit…and sometimes it falls into the Cuyahoga River…but “rocks?” Nay! Nay, I say!

  17. cheney cute? oh man
barf gag sick up in mouth

wash your mouth out with soap!

hey wait your turn i’m busy gargling with indusctrial strength mouthwash to get the cheney barf out!

you know scorp it’s sorta amazing how out of date that picture is. in fact it’s SO out of date that my hair is almost that long again :)

    and yes, i meant you.

we always welcome americans fleeing the land of the brave to move to the place that is free. expensive as hell in taxes but at least we believe in live and let live. i’m kind of a pro at rescuing lost americans now (right hubris?) :)

you know you’re right, almost all the us bashing in this comments section came from americans. that’s kinda funny. of course being canadian i then have to defend them as underdogs *snerk*

dude that speed skater? he deserves every ounce of props anyone can muster.

cleveland rocks? that’s a SONG?? good christ. oh canada is at least pretty.

  19. What’s this? You get the Listerine and I have to suck on a bar of soap? I see how it is. :-)

all the little chick with the crimson lips go “cleveland rocks, cleveland rock”

Yup, that’s the one. Unfortunately, the line Earthworm quoted is the MOST intelligent in the whole song.
…but P.O.T.U.S.A did a *great* version of it, though.

And you know what they say about Cleveland, Sass: “If you see this town a-rocking, don’t come here at all because something is terribly wrong and it is most likely an earthquake, soon to be followed by a gawd-awful Lake Erie tsunami that will bury the population under a bazillion gallons of dirty water, tampon applicators and dead fish!”

Heh! I love that old saying. It just…pops, wouldn’t you say?

And – now this is weird – I downloaded a version of “Oh Canada” sung by Celine Dion…and it was good! Please don’t tell anyone. Except for the whole blogverse. I’m gonna see this in McLaren’s next article, aren’t I? Damnit!

    Comment by I Am Scorpionic — March 1, 2006 @ 12:58 am | Reply

  20. earthworm: uh what?

scorp: well you’re the one who implied that cheney was cute. i mean it seems only fair that you have to suffer for that a smidgen more than i do? and i did say industrial strength listerine and that crap is almost as bad as soap.

that’s an actual line from the song? oh god that’s tragic. i’ll have to get speakers and add it to my download list.

i didn’t know they said that about cleveland but between you and elle i’m getting less and less enthused about going there… except to meet you guys AND try these sushi rolls that elle was talking about a while back.

    pops… yeah that’s it *snicker*

celine dion? in french? or in english? or both? she’s sorta awful but every now and then she sings something well.

nah scorp that would imply that she gave a shit what her readers thought of what she said about them. so i’m thinking you’re safe :)

You’re coming here? Cool! You prolly won’t hate it, but it’s a lot like a small town pretending to be a big city. Elle’s from NYC, so it’s not hard to see why Cleveland must be killing her. The energy’s all wrong here.

    heh! And I said I wouldn’t bitch about Cleveland…I’m such a contrary asshole! ;-)

  22. Hi Sass!
Was travelling all during the ‘Lympics so I missed most of the hoopla!
I have to say that I was pretty shocked to find no Canadian team in a male medal position. BUT, it’s good for hockey in general, better teams all around, and maybe this’ll jolt the powers-that-be to put together a team next time that can actually skate and pass!!

AND, I’ve been hooked on Strawberry Banana and The Vanilla Chai Tea with Soy Protein thingy for a while now! Hella-tasty stuff!!
The Chai thingy is very smooth on the throat, which is what I need right now due to an Alabama Head-Cold. NASTY.

AND, Leah McLaren does tend to roll out a clunker every couple of months or so. It really does seem like she isn’t trying sometimes, just plunking out crap that fits a trend or fad and fills column space. Kind of a lightweight.

Fight them critters making ya sick Sass, and feel better soon!!

well i keep threatening to visit elle and y’all are seriously not very far away so i might just do it. knowing me it won’t be until september though since i’m farking poor right now.

oh man i can totally see how that kind of town would kill elle… especially being from nyc.

    bitch on asshole! *snerk*

johnny: yeah how were your trips?

dude our team sucked total ass. my client told me a joke today (she loves the leafs too btw… it’s the client who gave me the tickets…)

pat quinn can take ninety five million dollars worth of the best hockey players in canada, the most respected and wonderful players we have and in two days? turn them into the toronto maple leafs.

and sundin looked so happy playing with sweden. gah it’s sad.

dude it’s pat quinn i’m telling you!

It’s time for someone to write a song abooot Toronto. In fact I think will. It will suck, but I’ll record it on my computer and make you all listen.

“make some soup. wrap a hot towel around your head.” (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – sorry, couldn’t resist)

  30. Dunno about the two different kinds of berry boost. I’ve only ever seen the one kind (I think it’s the 500%), but I don’t know why they’d short-change the Canadian market. Maybe it’s just that some people are afraid that if they take in too much Vitamin C they’ll start pissing stalactites.

  32. How many times have we heard now that Pat Quinn needs to get canned from Toronto? going on like 7 years now? outta the 8 he’s been coaching?

Toronto’s D may be shitty but they can score – Kaberle and McCabe play more offense than defense and with the new rules it should work, “should” being key.

The olympics were great to watch – basically it’s showing that the ‘golden child’ teams have to start playing and not expecting – just as you mentioned.

But you know what you’ve got going for you – at least the Leafs make the playoffs every now and again. The CBJ players pretty much plan their vacations right after the all-star game since they know they don’t give a shit about making it to the playoffs (in this case I’m not sure it’s the coaches fault but more Doug Mc’s (the GM) fault)

Bottom line – the players play – and if they don’t they get sent down. The coaches are supposed to coach – and if they don’t? they don’t get sent down. They get contract extensions and told “well it’s because you had so many injuries this year”. Helloooooo – it’s hockey EXPECT INJURIES!

No idea wtf I was talking about – but the olympics were great to watch and Sundin, Forsberg, the Sedin twins, Holmstrom all on one team was just a force to be friggin dealt with.

and friggin Ovechkin is a stud for the russians – and poor poor Jagr and his groin – that guy gives so much effort and gets hurt so often for it.

  33. murphy that’s the thing that’s so friggin weird, here in toronto no one EVER talks about firing pat quinn. i mean didn’t the canucks suck ass with him as their coach too? i’m trying to remember if that was when they had that cup run or not…

oh our defense sucks ass as defence but as a five man offence? fuck those boys kick ass. problem is they’re still hanging the goalie.

i had a great time watching the ‘golden children’ getting their butts kicked around the ice. i love when the underdogs win.

you’re right, at least i get to watch the first round or two of the playoffs with my team before their lame puck handling lands them on the golf course. your team is even more painful to watch.

you have to blame leafs management too though, they’re the ones who keep quinn around and keep hiring veterans right?

yeah i just do not get the free pass the coaches seem to get. dudes your team sucks, why is it one player’s fault (almost always the captain or the goalie too… like no one else was there)

oh yeah dude the swedes kicked some beautiful ass.

yeah i wish olympic hockey happened more often :)
