not just hockey

.
so the leafs are out.

bye bye my loves, i’m to be a calgary fan this year it seems. [see you can have one team per conference and then you only have a problem in the final and what are the odds of that?]

i love the leafs but i’ve acknowledged publicly that they sucked up the ice this year so i can’t be too stunned at their outness. i only hope that sundin’s stellar play in the latter part of the season puts the focus squarely where it belongs which is on pat quinn.

that guy is a relic and he should let go now.

i’m sad. it’s been a while since i haven’t watched the leafs in the playoffs. i mean calgary rocks but well… okay fine i’m in love with kippersoff and iginla but still. it’s nice to cheer for two teams at once.

calgary is having a pretty good year though and they’re going into the first round with home ice advantage so they’re doing all right heading into the second season. the general sentiment in the hockey community is that the cup is going west this year. apparently the teams are so much more well matched that everyone is playing better.

or something.

either way? the leafs are out.
.

i have just had two days off.

now because i’m insane i went climbing on the first day off and took a nasty pilates class on the second day off. it was actually a more brutal class than usual because something was up and i couldn’t get my spine to loosen up and move. it felt like i lost control of a bunch of muscles.

this does happen on occasion and i am due to get cranky and have sore boobs any day now. actually this is really interesting. it means that you lose your abs before you actually start to menstruate. hrm, i wonder what the lead time is. [update – about 16 hours]

of course i could have killed my abs at the gym yesterday…

i’m climbing really well lately but i’m still not happy. there’s some fundamental thing about what you do with your weight and your centre of gravity that i am just not getting. i’ve had this problem before with other sports as well and up to now i haven’t managed to get it.

i think maybe i should either ask rr or take some modern dance classes or both. i can see moving from the centre and i understand what it’s for and how people do it when i *see* it but i can also tell that i myself am not doing it.

this got me in trouble in footbag too.

i feel that pilates will help send me in the correct direction and that further climbing will teach me to fake it and from there i can learn it. and yet still i just know that there’s some thing i’m not finding.

in some ways i think it sort of relates to sex.

the really good climbers (in other words? all the ones you want to fuck after you watch them ascend something?) all move from the same place. it’s between the belly button and the pubic hair and it’s the centre of everything.

in martial arts they call it the kiri or belly and when they refer to it they mean the soul or the centre or your ‘self’ or your power … cause yeah i’m not a translator but you get the gist. [that’s why they disemboweled themselves… hara kiri was sort of to separate the spirit… ack i’m making a hack of it.]

regardless it’s the same thing.

the good dancers and the good high jumpers and the good skiers and climbers and fuckers and acrobats and hula hoopers and martial artists and movement specialists and everyone else that has it? they can do anything they fucking well please with their bodies. anything.

i mean i suck in comparison and i can do ridiculous things with mine. what it must be like to have that much more control and comprehension.

like wow.

the difference is that i am a trained body. trained from like birth to play at sports. but i don’t have that natural grace that some people have. i do have a lot of innate talent with sport but a lot of it is learned for me.

i’m cool with that, but sometimes it’s hard when i watch the naturals just walk in and a month later they’re better than me.

it’s okay though, in about two or three years i’ll put a pile of shit together and suddenly bam. i’ll ascend to another level entirely. or at least that’s what happened in the pool.

it took almost three years to put together my stellar kick with my natural stroke. but when it happened? i knocked twenty seconds off my time in an event that took under a minute. (fifty free at age nine or ten should take between 40-50 seconds. the world record might be under twenty… google… is 21 seconds for men and 24 seconds for women. i dropped to something around 41 from about a minute)

so training works over time but is a lot more frustrating in the short term *laughs*

i haven’t seen the videos from yesterday. well one but it irritated me. well except for the laughter after i fell. it was taken before i was really warm.

anyway, i’ve had two days off.

in a row.

and it was so lovely i can’t even put it into words. now i’m going to go to bed and then i’m going to get up a little bit early and go for coffee and a few more little treats for a gift i’m constructing.

teach a class and then head out of town until monday afternoon.

this long weekend is turning out stellar for me i must say and i’m actually feeling a little better. my body is *pissed off* with me for all the work i threw at it and because it’s about to remind me once again that i was born with ovaries but i feel so much more human.

it didn’t hurt at all that the weather was freaking stellar and looks to continue. i walked around in sandals today!

sandals!

i know, i was so happy. i even left the jacket in the car and wore a tank top around. that was slightly chilly but i didn’t care. i was shopping for presents in the sun on queen west in my favourite town after having a little snack and a cappuccino at terroni [good italian pizza joint says the girl who has a dad with more than one pizza oven]

then i rented (yes i’m admitting this and fuck you if you make fun of me) the perfect man and three kings. so i came home and i watched the perfect man and i smiled at it’s adorableness and cringed at the embarassing bits and actually found it to have quite an excellent message in the long run.

and then i watched the last relevant leafs game of the season (they won 5-1 but it wasn’t enough) and then othercat dropped in for the second movie.

three kings is really fun, if you missed it the first time around? go rent it!

night all, hope your weekend is as stellar as mine!

  1. I’m embarrassed to tell you how far I was into this before I realized that you weren’t talking about the appendages on trees. Yeah, not a sports fan…and even more, not a canadian sports fan.

I am thrilled you had a couple of good days! Yay!!

    footbag = hackeysac?

The chick flick…not a fan of those much, though I just rented An Unfinished Life and loved it, but Three Kings, is that with George Clooney? If so, decent film. :)
Love you, big hug, and happy Easter, my bunny!

  2. two days off in a row, always stellar!

sorry your team is out, but I must admit that hockey is just something that helps fill in the spaces of sportscenter and sometimes takes away from time that could be spent on other sports, but that’s your choice! LOL

I was a bit of the opposite of you … I had this natural flair and gift for sports … if I’d had more dedication and concentration, I’m sure I could have went a lot further than high school sports and pickup games, but oh well … c’est la vie …

I liked the cuteness of “The Perfect Man” … and “Three Kings” was great! Hope the rest of your weekend rocks the way the first part of it did :)

  3. kathi: actually i think that’s sort of cool… other than thinking that i don’t know how to make the word leaf into a multiple it must have made very little sense.

i’m not a huge sports fan but i am a jock and one of my better friends is a massive sports nut, works at the sports network and everything… so she’s making me worse than i was. but still? love me some hockey…

dude i’m so thrilled i had a couple of good days that there aren’t even words!

footbag does equal hacky sack yes… but one is a brand name and one is a sport

an unfinished life? never heard of it, you recommend? and yes, with george clooney.. it was a lot of fun

    *huggles*

dzer: freaking right it is! (by the way did you catch pics i posted? i know how you like them)

hockey rocks… as does curling… but i really am a canadian girl…and my back up sport calcio/soccer/football which is the italian in me.

it’s not that i don’t have the flair and the gift because i do. but it’s not natural and neither is yours. dude i started training when i was 6 weeks old. if you think back you may just realise that you did too :)

    (or not)

i tried out for the canadian national team, and had i kept swimming i might have just done that. but i didn’t.

the perfect man was SO cute i had a great time with it. i’m glad my flicks met with your approval :)

    and thanks!

  4. Hi Sassinak.

Sounds like you are truely a busy person. Getting time off is so crucuially import…Just for your mental health.Sounds like you are truly a busy person. Getting time off is so crucially import…Just for your mental health.
I start my trek back to the gym starting Monday Morning. My big ol Butt has got to loose some weight. The Trainers at the gym told me I’d like pilates, but I’m such a big dude…I would look stupid in there.
I’m not much of a hockey fan, and It’s too late for me to get to see him play this year, but that Alexander Ovechkin is awesome.
Well since the diet and trips to the gym start tomorrow, I’m off to the fridge! hehehehe

    Go Aves!

  6. hi puffin: i am an incredible busy person, it’s what comes of being self employed. i also have a schedule that i love and a job that makes me happy so it does balance out…

that said? i clearly need to take more time off…

your trek back to the gym? you were away? what caused that? (pilates is teh bomb and there’s almost always at least a couple of men in my classes… besides, who cares if you look dumb, it’s like crack for your body)

    mmmmmmmmm fridge

john: you’re right, you spell colorado N-O-R-D-I-Q-U-E-S

  7. Huh. I never would have guessed about footbag and hackey sac. I kinda just though you were going for 2 Ls and typed a G instead.

Your weekend sounds fantastic. I’m still sort of getting over mine because it’s been so relaxing and lovely and I was able to catch up with friends and call my parents AND my sister, and I got to see el Chulo if only for about 24 hours, it’s still always worth it.

I think Shakira’s got control of that little kiri section you’re talking about. I mean I am Egyptian and I grew up bellydancing at family parties, so her rapid hip movements do not impress me as much as they do others, but damn the woman can shake a lot of body parts in one rapidly graceful succession of movement.

  8. go red wings!

*ducks and hides from getting a beat down*

i liked three kings, good renter :)

and i’m with you. it may be a bit chilly, but i’m walkin around in my flip flops/slippers and nothing more than a tank top is sweater until it drops below 50 again!

    Comment by da buttah — April 16, 2006 @ 3:04 pm | Reply

  9. jmai: nope. and it’s a fast as hell sport that requires ridiculous levels of foot to eye coordination. being able to move from your center and stay low to the ground was crucial.

my weekend was awesome and my weekend redux (aka the time after the class i taught today) is also being excellent.

that’s just what’s up with me actually… i’m so relaxed that i’m losing the ability to talk…

yeah i think she does. the really good dancers do too and it’s innate. it’s then trained to a high degree of perfection but it’s hard to know if they’re born with it or not…

    elle: lol

hey they’re having an awesome season, cheer on. just don’t expect me to cheer *for* them with you… although i will defend to the death your *right* to cheer for them.

three kings was great fun, i’m glad to have seen it.

i wore high heeled sandals and a long skirt today (i know, i was stunned too) and it was GREAT! i did add a sweater though…

  10. go sharks!

    oh, sorry. couldn’t help it.

god, you’re so right about the people who can move from their “centers” the way you describe. inexplicably hot.

    yay, for your days off!
sandals. i’m envious. i got a pedi on friday night even though the weather’s still shitty…just because. take that, mother nature!

    Comment by terry — April 16, 2006 @ 11:51 pm | Reply

  11. Most of my dance training is in modern dance, and the great thing about the woman I learned from is that she focused on movements that weren’t as much “modern” as they were “centered.” If you took some classes I guarantee you’d feel that pull in the right spot and start to piece it all together. Just remember, there’s always someone in that climbing gym wishing they could climb just like you ;)

    Happy Sunday…wait…now it’s Monday where you are…oy…

  12. That game was just too painful to watch. I know I have McCabe on my fantasy team and all, but dammit…. getting slaughtered by the Sabres in the last game of the season?! AH!

  13. terry: yeah cheechoo is pretty impressive… and causing cool shit to happen in his town. also? i declare this an apology for hockey affiliation free zone. so there *grin* [i can’t help it, my best friend is a *barf* habs fan]

it’s so hot and i can’t put it into words, it just is or it isn’t. and when it is? *slurp*

i am having such a delicious time i can hardly talk, clearly i needed some down time and it’s been *good*

dude i was a tad chilled and i wore them anyway. they make me 6’2!! :)

i’m getting my first ever mani/pedi on april 24th. i got it for christmas from a client!

treesaaaaaaaaaaaa! (god i love playing with your name, i hope it doesn’t fuss you?)

what’s funny about your teacher is that if she did that it seems to me that she was a lot closer to the definition of modern dance then a lot of people who think they know it actually are… erk english!

i’m planning to take classes but so far i can’t free my schedule well enough to do it. they say i *have* to take fundamentals 1 before i take anything else and that’s cool i guess but i’m a movement instructor. i just need to learn their terms. i don’t see why i can’t take technique 1 instead you know? *grumble*

i can’t imagine anyone in the world wishing that they were me. i mean really why?

uh for me it’s sunday because i haven’t slept yet. when i wake up? that’s monday.

wes: it’s not the last game, there’s one more. or will they not play it if it isn’t relevant?

at least they slaughtered ottawa last night? when it might have mattered?

and um… the sabres are kicking ass this year. (but i’m still glad i didn’t see the game, last night’s was good yo!)

how do i know all this crap?

Well, if the Aves can get a few points off of Edmonton tonight, they get Calgary first round in the playoffs so we’ll see how that goes.

Sorry, Elle, but I think I’m required by Colorado law to tell you that the Red Wings suck… ;-)

  16. deb: well truly i’d like to fuck someone who moves like that… so it would be sort of fun to find another brainy jock and go at it… (actually i know more smart jocks than dumb ones)

course i’d have to like him first and he’d have to like me back and and and so i’ll just stay celibate.

i had a fantastic break dude thanks!

john: i think the word gotcha comes to mind *grin*

oh i hope that doesn’t happen yet, i like the aves a little and i love calgary… that would be a shitty first round for me!

  17. Yaay for sandals…although I hope you understand I have not stopped wearing sandals since last summer…one of the perks of Florida. Although, since I am not a heat person, we could consider that not so much a perk but something you live with. And surely your feet not feeling like they are in a convection oven helps…a lot.

And speaking of body parts…the things you are able to do with your body are just amazing to me. I understand that you find other people’s abilities amazing…but that’s just because you are used to you. But us mere mortals look at you pilates teaching people in AWE…AWE I tell you. The magical things you can do. LOOK AT THE PRETTY LIGHTS kind of awe.

So yeah…and two days off are just lovely, even if you went to the gym anyway…because you were there for you…not instructing…and that makes a HUGE difference.

What’s with my caps today? I think I am a bit hyper. It’s Spring Break. Kids are not here…so yaay. Even though I am still working and all.

    :)

    Comment by Natalia — April 17, 2006 @ 11:15 am | Reply

  18. nat: i do understand, but you’re willing to understand that sandals for a canadian are a highly symbolic moment.

i hate shoes in the summer, it makes your feet cook all over the place… stupid sweating toes inside socks is the ickiest feeling ever…

i sometimes describe pilates as a road … and everyone is on the same road but just at different points of it. i think that sums up movement really well too. sure i’m good, but my teacher is better… and her teacher is better than her and so on… well actually that particular chain ends there *grin*

and yes, i am used to me… i’m even a little full of contempt for me cause well, i’m used to my amazingness :)

yay i’m a pretty lights kind of awesome! *snoopydance*

the two days off were fantastical let me tell you… and today isn’t sucking either :)

(and you’re right, that makes all the difference)

yay for hyper…. yay for capitals… yay for… uh spring!

    :)
