inspire, verb

.
you know how sometimes people can inspire you just by being themselves? somehow through talk or communication of whatever sort you end up improving your own life when they aren’t even there?

there are the people that my grandmother thought you should marry, in fact what she said was “marry someone who brings out the best in you.” smart lady.

personally i think it applies equally to friends, lovers AND spouses but anyway, i digress.

the point is that lately i have been hanging out with a chef. does he give me cooking lessons? no. does he cook for me? sadly, no. does he do anything other than talk about food with passion and joy? nope.

and yet there i was, bright and early on thursday morning, wandering home from work and thinking ‘hmmm i should make breakfast’ and since i only really have two kinds of breakfast ever and only one of them involves cooking this was pretty much a given. i wasn’t having yogurt and granola and flax and fresh fruit and maybe nutella all whomped together. nope, i was having a couple of eggs steamed in a tiny bit of butter mixed with water and served inside a half a pita and beside a couple of potato patties (from cavendish farms… SO yummy.)

and then it hit me, why was i just automatically making the same food? how had i gotten into this same food rut?

i used to cook. i used to cook for othercat and i all the time. i used to make lunch and make enough for three days so i could bring it to work. i used to invent things.

in fact, i used to have a kitchen i LIKED and currently i don’t.

but still, i said to myself, “self why are we making the same old thing? is it any wonder we never cook at home anymore?” and so i went to the store and i got a tomato and some cheese and a yellow pepper and some mushrooms and home i came.

in the SAME exact amount of time as my standard cholesterol laden and not very healthful breakfast?

i sauteed the mushrooms and peppers and then cracked some eggs over them and left them to sit. toasted up the tortillas just enough to make them warm and bubbly (in the toaster natch) and chopped up some of the tomato.

in less time than this post is taking to type i had two burritos, one with the egg mix, tomato and cheese and one with that plus some spicy smoked turkey. (of course garlic and hot sauce were in the eggs yeesh)

fuck me was it yummy.

and so easy that i made it again today.

[please note that pile has been feeding me home cooking for months, which hasn’t hurt either]

and with that tiny little bit of inspiration i feel myself starting to cook with joy for myself again and this makes me so happy. i didn’t notice it fading away but i did notice that it was gone and i considered it nigh on to a tragedy.

and now i know *how* it happened.

my accident made it impossible to stand for more than a few minutes at a time for like two years SO i got stuck in a rut and i didn’t even notice it happen. i got SO stuck in that rut that even if i made something interesting i just thought of it as work. this from a chick that didn’t have a recipe so she made up peppercorn sauce from scratch (and it was de-fuckin-licious.) this from a chick whose cooking has drawn pretty happening reviews.

i am not a chef but i am a heck of a home cook and i forgot that. hell i think my favourite cookbook rotted away when i wasn’t looking.

so chef, if you’re reading, which i don’t think you are? THANKS! breakfast was delicious and inspiration yummier still. [no worries y’all, the compliment got passed along]

  1. Oh man I could go for that burrito right now!

I think you have the correct amount of selfishness. In my mind everybody should take care of themself and if they want to share there life then the selfishness would be about half. Looks like you want to share. I agree.

  2. I am so jealous that you can just “whip something together”. I am recipe bound!!! When I have a recipe, I am a good cook :( Your breakfast may inspire me though!!!

It is rare to have someone in your life that can make you self-reflect and encourage you to be your best person.

No, the “gut” isn’t based on “catgut”–I’m a colon surgeon.

Hey–am I the first to post???

  4. pyr: it was fuckin’ awesome so i would totally recommend it.

i think you’re right, over giving is an excellent way to kill relationships. and i’ve seen lots of people do it. i’d like to share but not enough to lose my *self*

    gutty lady: *grin*

well, i got my first cookbook when i was 6 or 8 or something and when i was 5 or 6 the 4 or 5 year old next door taught me to make scrambled eggs. by now the cookbooks are unnecessary.

thing with recipes? think of them as suggestions or ideas instead of orders. like i look at cookbooks for ideas and then just make something up in the middle.

be inspired be inspired! what a lovely chain of inspiration!

you are correct, and i have LOTS of them.

now i’m curious about the gut thing :)

    nope, you’re second *g*

  5. sass … this post totally inspired me to have eggs for my VERY late dinner, which I just polished off. Since it’s so late, I didn’t feel like driving out for ingredients, so when with what I had.

Four eggs, whipped by hand, with some salt and pepper and some diced onions and garlic. Poured that into a skillet and popped some hamburger buns that were going stale into the toaster oven. Back to the skillet to stir up the eggs and add in some small chunks of swiss cheese, then back to the toaster oven to brush on some melted butter and garlic salt on top.

In short … thick egg-n-cheese sammiches on garlic-toasted buns … mmmm … yummy most!

    Thanks again!

  7. dzer: nice. i don’t have to go anywhere for stuff since i live maybe a hundred feet from the store that i went to.

mmmmmmmmmm diced garlic, good idea, i’ll do that next time. that sounds fantastic. i couldn’t take that much food or that much dairy but i remember when i would have died of bliss for the cheese.

    welcome!

terry: so cook something delicious :)

and thanks, i thought that was sort of silly.

I’m afraid to take the quiz. The Jehova Witness’s today dropped off literature (they’re by every week for a dozen years now) titled ‘A Happy Marriage’…they’re late, LOL.

I am so glad that you found someone to inspire you :) It is so nice to re-find something that you love, when you tell me how you love my childishness that is all it is, someone inspired me to tap back into that, they made me happier in doing it! We need more people around like that!

I am not vain…I used to get asked all the time why I was with my ex, he wasn’t excatly a “looker” but I loved him for him…geez I dont like the vanity thing!
