here are some rejected pilates pics from the photo shoot for my website…

DO NOT TRY ANY OF THIS AT HOME.

period. most of these are rejects for bad form as much as anything, not to mention you aren’t a pilates instructor.

no i mean it. don’t do it.

don’t.

:)

===============

be sure to thank hubris for being the photographer and othercat for the camera!

  1. I promise not to use those picture for anything except pilates form. I won’t stare at them later after the lad goes to sleep. I will not do anything that is prohibited in the bible. I promise. LOL. Girl, you have got it going on…and if I didn’t think so…I just would not say anything. Wow is the word that came to mind….then thanks.

  5. Damn woman, you are some kind of limber!

Great pics sweetie. I could do a whole porfolio on bad form. Hey, we could do something with that… Maybe a “How not to do pilates”???

    Seriously… great pics :)

  6. cas: thanks man, i appreciate that… really.

what you do with your bible is between you and your bible… i mean it’s a bit weird and all but i guess you know… if bibles do it for ya.

    also? *blush* thanks!

    will: um?

is there any way under the sun i can answer that question?

    (thanks btw)

elle: damm all that lawyer school paid off *grin*

it’s fun the stuff i was doing but ultimately not the point. it’s easier in a lot of ways than the fundamentals.

    also? *snerk*

    bubbles: *blush*

wait i made you speechless? that’s like impossible though??

i love that last pic, it’s totally unsuitable but nonetheless one of my favourites :)

robyn: i’m actually so flexible that it’s almost dangerous. a lot of the challenge for me is to move well but in control. to actually shorten things.

we took like 250 pics… it was easy to cull for ones i liked :)

thanks! was so much fun and i’ve learned a ton about what i need to work on.

  14. Between admiring the pictures, and criticizing the form, I’d say you’re working yerself into a slightly neurotic state. For once, could you just think happy thoughts that you aren’t the inflexible couch-ridden mess you were a few years ago?

As always, every artist is their own worst critic, so I will join the chorus of people who think you look fabulous, and you ought to quit knocking yerself. You have gotten to know the “Art” of Pilates quite well, and you should be proud of your success.

You’re not just hot, you’re incendiary!

deb: you mean the one where you lie on the ground, look up, and smile? cause if that’s how you pull muscles i’m afraid for how inflexible you are!

    hehehehe

I’ve never been sure if Pilates borrowed from Martha Graham or did Graham borrow from Pilates?

I must say I did have fun ‘correcting’ your form in a couple…it’s the teacher in me.

You have a lovely strong body and an inner light that just radiates from with in you.

they borrowed from each other because they shared so many students. i’ve heard they didn’t like each other much…

yeah my sacrum is about three inches too high in swan for example :) i’m curious what pointers you see… i love other people’s eye.

    thank you! thank you muchly!

  35. Whenever I see pics of you I think you look somewhat like Carrie Anne Moss. I don’t know if it means much to you or not. I get told I look like just about everyone not famous. I aspire to be in way better shape so all in all I can say I aspire to be like you. If that’s ok?

    Comment by Amber — July 12, 2006 @ 7:02 pm | Reply

  36. Well from a Graham perspective?
Your fourth position on the floor ( I am not sure what you call it in Pilates) Your knee is too far forward and you are ‘sitting’ in your hips.

I need to really get back into my Pilates classes and dance classes!

    Comment by Madame X — July 12, 2006 @ 7:29 pm | Reply

  37. amber: i’ve heard that before in fact. she’s the supermodel thin version of me *grin* … i think it’s the line of the lips or something.

um. you aspire to be like me? pardon me while i faint. damm girl. if that works for you then more power to you!

madame: do you mean downward dog? i don’t have a very good one. i do tend to sit in my hips, i’m still pretty weak from the pelvic floor/obdurator perspective so it’s hard for me still to get up and out of my hips… and that was ten minutes in without warmup *grin*

i don’t get the knee thing though… (all the pics are names what they are btw)

i need to get into dance classes but i teach during all the good ones.

  38. Damn woman. Some of these look like album covers or print ads. And some of them have the rare quality of capturing something essentially ‘you’. Hold onto these.

Props go out to Hubris for his mad Leibovitzian skillz. Sometimes the best photographer is the one who actually sees you.

    Comment by Princess Valium — July 12, 2006 @ 9:49 pm | Reply

  39. pv: yeah i’m really delighted. there’s actually one that’s for sure for the website where i look so beautiful i’m not sure i believe that it’s me. hubris did a lovely job.

next time you’re over i’ll put on the slideshow and you can see the out takes and the really good ones.

i knew that he would, he has a good eye and he thinks that i’m beautiful. seems like a fantastic combination. i hope he’s reading all his compliments…

  40. The one with the mermaidshrug…That’s also 4th on the floor in Graham technique.
I made the correction from a dancer’s point of view.

I always have problems with my lower back I tend to ‘sway’ it out.
    Know what I mean, jellybean?

    Comment by Madame X — July 13, 2006 @ 12:12 pm | Reply

  41. madame: cool i didn’t know that. it’s called mermaid but it’s really prep for mermaid. it’s kind of mermaid on the reformer turned into a stretch to do at home. okay point. (it’s called shrug cause i have another pic of mermaid in another outfit)

okay so in pilates i’ve got my right knee way too far out to the side, it should be coming out of my hip straight at the camera.

my left knee is therefore slightly forward of where it should be. my chin is pressed forward and cocked a bit upward… and i suspect i’m not chopped into my bottom arm because my upper right ribs are flat instead of making a smooth arc.

    :)

(and? i’m sitting in my hips *g*)
how does that relate to graham thought?

    damm this convo is fun.

yeah you’re a dancer with a dancer’s back. i can help you with that with a quick couple of things if you want?

  42. Wha?
    Are these Cougaring outfits?
    I’m confused.

You look as lovely as ever Sass, and your expression in the photo called ‘resting1’ is SO you. Good job, Hubris.

  46. Sass Q for you…in pic #4 from the top are your heals supposed to be touching the ground?

    Thanks :)

    Comment by HuneeB — July 18, 2006 @ 10:03 pm | Reply

  47. uh
    no and yes
in other words that’s what you do as you settle in and then you slowly reach your heels down toward the floor

BUT it is not acceptable to overstrain or round your back to do it. most people never get their heels down.

alternate version involves heels down and knees bent but i don’t like it as much though i do keep the knees soft.

    Comment by sassinak — July 18, 2006 @ 10:07 pm | Reply

  48. hmm so is it bad that when I do it my knees are locked, heals on the ground and I don’t think my back is rounded at all…although my feet and hands are much closer to each other; foot to foot and hand to hand not feet to hands…

Did that make any sense at all? Geez I am retarded tonight.

I mean to say my feet are usually much closer to one another like almost touching and my hands are in line with my shoulders, knees are solid, heals on the ground and back not rounded. It feels like a good stretch in my calfs and a little in the back of my thighs but more in the calf. Is this bad for me?

    Comment by HuneeB — July 19, 2006 @ 12:39 am | Reply

  49. hunee you should never have your knees locked. instead of thinking about straightening your knees think of reaching your heels down and your sitting bones up.

this has the effect of lengthening your knees but is less likely to lock them. if your back is pretty flat save for natural spinal curves you’re okay with heels down but not with knees locked.

pilates and yoga differ a lot on what correct stance is and remember i’m really tall and have broad shoulders so my hands are likely to be further apart than yours if for no other reason than that.

it isn’t bad but soften the knees and reach the sitting bones up to get into your hamstrings more.

that said? down dog is a spine stretch not a hamstring stretch

that said? remember half these pics are rejected for form

that said? ask othercat, he does a lot more yoga than i do :)
