shindiggery

.

holy baloney batman i threw a shindig!

.

no, there are no pictures.

i always seem to ‘forget’ to take pictures at the good parties…

it’s not on purpose or anything it’s just i forget i have a camera and then the party is nearly over and someone goes ‘oh there’s no pictures’ and i think to myself ‘fucking right, and that’s why you cut loose and had fun isn’t it?’

.

dudes.

i threw a shin.dig. a capital S full on people having a great time and staying way later then they meant to shindiggery do.

and it was great.

shane insisted on catering and trust me kids, when shane offers to make her crazy olive dip and her crazy apple cake and date squares and several dips and crudites and casava pie (don’t ask but SOOO good.  it’s pie with MEAT in it!!!)

we got a cheese tray and made meatballs and then hubris and mightydoll made chili and tommer and rachel brought cookies (seperately) and da-mute made filo and nutella yumminess and the paper guy and his wife brought four layer mexi-style dip they made and there was wine and brownies and pie and fun and and and

.

dudes, we did it UP

and it was good.

.

at one point i came into my room and sat with my sist… you know i don’t know who i sat with… and all i could hear was happy conversation going on in the other room.

many of my loved ones came and you know what?

they loved each other!

.

i have little signs of my loved ones everywhere in new plants and candle holders and coasters and awesome leftover food and more wine and beer than i started with!

my place is filled with memories of people i love or am just learning to know and little ghosts of their smiling selves everywhere.

some of the funniest people ended up getting together (shush not like that) and well, it was awesome.

hell rachel threatened to get me to throw her housewarming when she finally has it.

.

you know what’s interesting about a party though?

who does and doesn’t come.

who does and doesn’t try.

you learn a lot about the people in your life when you throw a party and you definetely find out something about them.

a mutual acquaintance didn’t show up and yet she’d had several weeks notice and claimed to be coming until the day of and then made up an excuse.

and it was so obviously an excuse, heck she even called herself ‘the worst friend in the world’ in the message.  i’m choosing to assume she’s a little agoraphobic or something but it’s weird.

weird like the people who are so excited to come and then don’t show up or call or ever mention it again.

weird like people you love but who said ‘there’s no way we can make it’ who show up anyway even though they really, really don’t have time or like people you hardly know and invite at the last minute who show up with a really thoughtful gift.

you know, weird.

.

i cut all my nails off to go climbing.

yes, i miss them already.

.

did you catch that?  i get to go climbing!!

only on the baby walls but still!!!!!

.

i found friends i didn’t know i had this weekend and it’s wonderful.

i learned that people i treasure really do treasure me back.

i was surprised to find that some people really can be counted on.

i forgot to get drunk, which i did at my last housewarming as well  (at that one i kept losing margaritas.  at this one i kept losing beers.)

i got a few really awesome gifts.

i ate and fed my friends fantastic food.

.

i actually saw a man show up with two friends, cruise the party and then leave to go hang out at a university bar…

and he’s forty.

dude, you’re forty.  find a real woman.

.

most of all?

i threw a SHINDIG and it ROCKED!

;>

  2. i knew i’d miss a great party. i was only getting back in town at 8:30 p.m. after having had to literally scrape infected fur off several donkey bellies, wash with antiseptic soap plus water, let dry and spray with a blue antibacterial (don’t know what all else is in it). bleeding was happening. it’s kind of like itchy eczema for them, i suppose. but the fur and skin are all sloughing off. the other volunteers were basically grossed out so the de-sensitized to blood and gore person (moi) got to do the fun stuff (not). one of the donks managed to scrape all the skin off his left haunch on a downed branch. i almost got sick when i found him limping about with his hide literally hanging in bloody tatters. freaking crazy animal! it’s spring, i suppose, and skin issues are a major big deal. after all that ’emergency medical care’ i was totally done in. went to bed without taking a bath or having a glass of wine, even. i must be nuts.

  3. Donkeys?
How far out of town was this?

It sounds like a great party. I’m sorry we couldn’t make it.
I do have a (very small) gift for you when we meet again.

  4. terry: honestly i was so busy that it sort of went by in a blur. there was a lot of hugging and much grinning and a few moments with the chocolate fondue and the meatballs…

but i had a great time without noticing the time pass and i sure was ready for bed when it ended over EIGHT HOURS LATER!

    .
    gabi: holy fuck

i’ve gone to bed in that condition, well maybe not quite that dirty because rotten skin and hide weren’t involved but definetely filth encrusted.

sometimes it really is easier to just wash the freaking sheets.

and we’re all nuts, embrace it :)

    .

clarity: she works volunteer at a donkey sanctuary out guelph way.

it was a great party actually, i think it’s because i ‘forgot’ to turn up the music ;>

i have books for you that i cant seem to get you…

  5. So many yaays for you. I love the fact that you are happy at the new place and that the teaching is going well. I am so glad that you are finding friends everywhere and that these people were happy to be in your company and celebrate this milestone. And OMG the climbing. It seems things are coming together. And it couldn’t happen to a nicer gal. Enjoy, dollface.

  7. I forgot to bring your housewarming gift with me, but I’ve had it since January and I have to say, I kind of like the idea of giving it to you when you’ve got time to appreciate it and tell me how awesome it is.

Apparently I’m in need of some positive reinforcement.

Don’t worry about the people who bailed, last-minute or otherwise. Focus on the sheer number of cool people who DID show up. I wish I had a chance to mingle more than I did, because the place was positively crawling with attractive men, the majority of whom I’m sure are big unashamed geeks like myself. The women I’m sure were equally as geeky and worthy of conversation, but, you know, I’m goal-oriented.

  8. holy crap! you haven’t been mentioning being affected by spring blues this year. ha! could it have been situational? you don’t have time to get depressed this year, eh? if a person is busy doing stuff they feel is worth doing, there’s no room for depression. it’s important to recognize the life situations which banish blues. remember them when the blues threaten and get moving.

clarity: the donkey sanctuary of canada is located near guelph. here’s a link to the pictures of Kenneth Chou. he’s a pro who went out to see the donkeys on two occasions. i’m the weird person with a red hat on and her nose about an inch away from Buffy’s nose.

i hope this works. if it does, enjoy.

  10. That sounds SO awesome, I LOVE throwing parties and it’s always best when the parties turn out really, really good. Of course all too often at parties that *I* throw I wind up drinking far too much since for once I don’t have to drive, but I still have a really really good time and am pretty sure I know when others are too.

I know precisely what you mean about how parties bring out the weirdness in some people and you learn or realise things that maybe you hadn’t seen before (or wanted to). I have seen this phenomenon in action more times than I care to consider and it’s definitely weird. ah well, it’s all part of the circle I guess. People come and go but party memories last a lifetime!

Also? YAY climbing, I know that was the icing on the cake of your week… month? Ah who cares, icing is always good!

  11. Hmmm… I have sincere worries about men who go trolling for women who are way younger than themselves… I’m 46, I consider my age range to be 35-50… If they are young enough to be your kid, what would you have in common with them?

And maybe it’s just me, but meatballs dipped in chocolate fondue does NOT sound very appetizing.
